(Taipei Report) Renowned for seamlessly intertwining his rich cultural heritage with revolutionary metalworking techniques, Taiwanese jewellery designer Hao-Yang Lai has carved a distinct niche in the world of high luxury. This coming November, the designer’s eponymous brand, HAOYANG Art Jewels, will mark a significant milestone with the highly anticipated opening of its flagship boutique in the serene environs of Maple Garden, a space destined to become a sanctuary for bespoke artistry.

Among his most arresting creations is the Monstera pendant, a veritable masterclass in both metallurgical precision and optical diamond setting. Drawing inspiration from the organic contours of the natural world, Lai utilises his formidable technical training to achieve a breathtaking lightness of form. Dense blocks of metal are miraculously transformed into streamlined, fluid silhouettes that mirror the impressions of a falling leaf.

Trained at Central Saint Martins, Hao-Yang Lai shifted his focus from product design to jewelry at the encouragement of his mentor. His graduate collection swept top industry honors, earning him both the Swarovski Scholarship and the Theo Fennell Best Design Award. Rather than accepting the immediate job offers that followed from prominent international brands, Lai returned home to fulfil his conscription service, using the interlude to refine the vision for his future brand.

During his military service, Lai joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), a deployment that took him to Guatemala to spearhead an “Entrepreneurship and Incubation Program” in partnership with the local government and non-governmental organisations. Immersed in advising small-to-medium enterprises on fundraising, strategic marketing, and corporate management, the experience provided Lai with a sharp, real-world business acumen. Equipped with this new entrepreneurial fortitude, he officially launched his jewellery house in 2019.

Beyond his mastery of precious metals, Lai is equally celebrated as an accomplished photographer. His photographic portfolio, which frequently explores the evocative lines, beauty, and grace of the female form, has garnered international acclaim, appearing in leading publications and global exhibitions. It is precisely this trained photographic eye, attuned to the delicate nuances of composition and shadow, that allows Lai to intimately understand the human form and masterfully execute haute joaillerie commissions tailored to the individual collector.
